What I've Finished Reading: The Elegance of the Hedgehog

This blog is NOT a book review blog. However, on occasion, when I've read something wonderful, I feel the need to share. Obviously, this is one of those times.

                 The Elegance of the Hedgehog

Muriel Barbery (Author), Alison Anderson (Translator)

I love this novel. And here's why.

The concept of seeing beauty in everything around us is not unique, but it's so easily forgotten. This novel opens our eyes to the joy of observing. The thrill of finding "meaning" in everyday objects. Chapter after chapter is an opportunity to stumble across another beautfully written sentence or another unique perspective on the human need to conform to expectations.

So many times while reading, I found myself drifting off into personal memories and thoughts, tangential but connected to the author's descriptions. Any novel that jumpstarts a little introspection is a step in the right direction.

Read it. Think about yourself. Enjoy life a little.

  1. I wouldn't mind reading a good novel -- after I've finished all this reading for my PhD though ... I miss reading for fun! Will make note of the title.
